Motion detectors are devices designed to sense movement within a specific area. They form a key part of modern alarm systems, helping to identify potential intruders quickly and accurately.
Most motion detectors work by monitoring changes in their environment such as heat, movement, or energy patterns. When something unusual is detected, the sensor sends a signal to the alarm system, which can then trigger an alert, send images, or notify a monitoring centre.

How should motion sensors be installed to avoid false alarms?
- Avoid placing PIR sensors: Near heat sources like radiators or vents. Rapid temperature changes can trigger false alarms.
- Do not face sensors directly at windows or glass: Sunlight or strong IR sources can overload the sensor.
- Adjust detection zones sensibly Especially in multi-zone PIRs or those with Fresnel lens segmentation to limit sensitivity to the desired fields of view.
Do motion sensors have cameras?
Not all motion sensors have cameras. Most standard motion detectors like Passive Infrared (PIR) sensors simply detect heat or movement in a room without capturing any images.
However, some advanced systems, such as those offered by Verisure, combine motion detection with built-in cameras. For example:
- GuardVision™ Photo Detectors: These act as both motion sensors and cameras. When movement is detected, the device captures a series of still images.
