How do burglar alarms work?

Burglar alarms are home security systems that use one or more sensors to detect unexpected activity or intrusions in and around your home. These sensors are linked to a central control unit, and a control panel from which you can arm and disarm the system.

Arming and disarming the system is usually done via a code entered on a pin pad on the central unit, or by using a key fob provided with your burglar alarm. Nowadays, many burglar alarms can also be controlled remotely via a smartphone app, thanks to which you can arm and disarm the system and be notified of any triggered sensors.

When the system is armed, if one of the sensors is triggered, it sends a signal to the central unit which activates an alarm. Standard burglar alarms include an alarm unit which produces a loud noise and/or flashing lights to alert you or your neighbours if a sensor is triggered. Verisure's professionally-monitored burglar alarms also alert a 24/7 Alarm Receiving Centre in the event of a breach, meaning trained professionals can assess the situation and intervene if necessary, either by dispatching security guards or alerting the police.

Burglar alarms can come with different types of sensors, depending on your household's needs. Door and window sensors are designed to be placed on the entry points to your home, forming an electric circuit. When the alarm is armed and a door or window is opened, the circuit is broken, which will set off the alarm.

Motion detectors, also known as Passive Infrared Sensors (PIRs), are also commonly found in burglar alarm systems. They detect motion by identifying changes in heat signatures caused by bodies moving, triggering the alarm in case of an intrusion. As such, they are most optimally placed in high footfall areas inside your home.

Glass break sensors trigger the alarm if they detect the sound or vibrations of glass breaking, alerting you in the event a window is smashed.

Photo detectors such as Verisure’s GuardVision™ use infrared technology to take burst photographs of any intruders attempting to burgle your home. Some burglar alarm systems also come with indoor or outdoor security cameras to further increase the protection of your home.
