Do smart locks work during power outages?
If you are put off by the idea of a smart lock because it might fail if there is no power, you can rest assured that this is not the case.
Smart locks are designed to work even during power outages, so you don’t have to worry about being locked in or out of your property when there is no electricity. How this works depends on the type of smart lock you opt for.
Most smart locks on the market, including the Verisure LockGuard, are battery-powered, so a power outage would have no impact on their functioning. However, their batteries need to be changed or recharged on a regular basis. Make sure you opt for battery-powered smart locks that also have some kind of backup in case the battery runs out before you have time to change it. LockGuard comes with a physical backup key.
Smart locks that are hard-wired in (meaning they are powered by being plugged into your mains) are susceptible to power outages. However, most have a manual backup access option such as using a key or a code, so you can still enter or lock your property even with no power going through. This does mean that these locks don’t entirely do away with needing a key.
